Let's hope he was misquoted, which certainly does happen. Regarding your Broadway show question, it's just not the moment to think of a good answer. I've seen great ones and bad ones . . . and been shocked by how tiny and tawdry some of those famous theatres are. Remind me of this question when I have time to think properly.Beverlyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15515783219367479399noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3070623657970000135.post-87932819520469422202014-11-05T06:51:58.149-08:002014-11-05T06:51:58.149-08:00I was intrigued by Birdman when I heard the storyl...I was intrigued by Birdman when I heard the storyline - but got very turned off by Alejandro González Iñárritu’s trashing of a filmmaking legend. Because Birdman is shot in a series of long takes - someone apparently mentioned Alfred Hitchcock's Rope to the director. Rope is the experimental movie Hitchcock made in 1948 - it appears to be a single long take for 80 minutes. It is actually 8 pieces each lasting 10 minutes - with carefully orchestrated actions that block the camera for a second at the end of each 10 minute segment - which is artfully blended into the beginning of the next piece. Hitch and his crew went to a lot of trouble to make this work - they built a miniature cityscape outside the apartment where the movie takes place - and then set up effects that change the clouds over that miniature so that it's not just a static painting or cyclotron out there. I personally feel it's a bravura piece of cinema. Alejandro González Iñárritu did not agree with me - he said: "There’s always this comparison with Rope, which I think is a terrible film. I don’t like it. I think it’s a very bad film of Hitchcock’s." Bad form. Even if you are tired of having your film compared with the older movie - or even if you truly don't like it - show some graciousness. Say they're very different - or that it's not one of your favorite Hitchcock movies. So I'm left feeling not very gracious myself - and I probably won't watch Birdman as a result. I might use the time to watch Rope again.

What have been your favorite Broadway shows you've seen, Ms. G? I haven't yet been to the city for any length of time - I drove through the Bronx one winter night to rescue a friend in Boston - but a Broadway show is on my bucket list.Craig Edwardshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06037542638067599437noreply@blogger.com
